Thank you for your interest in Second Nature. Second Nature is a licensed treatment program that uses the wilderness setting as a clinically-focused intervention to teach students accountability, communication skills, and healthy emotional and behavioral habits. Second Nature's base office is located in Duchesne, Utah in the Uinta Basin. During the summer months, we operate in the Uinta mountain range, and in the winter months, we explore the high desert just north of Nine Mile Canyon on Bureau of Land Management property. Duchesne is a two-hour drive from Salt Lake City, Utah.
Field Instructors are pivotal to the success of each and every student at Second Nature. Field instructors work an 8-day on, 6-day off schedule. For the entire 8 days, instructors hike and camp with clients ranging in age from 13-17. Field Instructors work with Licensed Therapists to deliver an individualized experience to each client.
The Field Instructor position is ideal for individuals who wish to have a positive impact on youth while working in a beautiful outdoor setting. Second Nature is known for its outstanding Field Instructors and high Field instructor-to-student ratios. Field Instructors receive comprehensive wilderness and therapeutic skills training during a 7-day Orientation trip along with continuous, consistent training throughout their employment at Second Nature.
Applicants come to Second Nature with a variety of backgrounds and experience levels. An open mind and willingness to learn are essential. Second Nature will also process a State and Federal criminal background check (BCI) of all potential employees.
After reviewing your completed application materials, Second Nature may wish to conduct a phone interview with you. After the interview, you may be invited to participate in a 7-day Orientation trip. The Orientation trip is viewed as the second part of the interview process. It is also a time for the prospective employee to "interview" the program. Participation in the Orientation trip does not guarantee a position; however, we only select participants who meet all initial requirements, with the high hopes that they will be hired. New employees are offered positions on the last day of Orientation.
At Second Nature we believe in supporting our staff in their professional development as well as in their transition into the company and the wonderful world of wilderness therapy. We offer a sign-on bonus of $1,100 after completing the paid internship level. We also offer limited affordable housing for new staff and provide direct access to their own personal therapeutic support system.
As an investment in our future staff, we also provide all required certifications. Starting with providing first aid and CPR during the field interview at no cost to applicants.
