Clinical Approach

How Healing Happens

Second Nature was founded on the belief that lasting change requires more than excellent therapy sessions. It requires a therapeutic experience where every interaction supports the same clinical goals.

Rather than separating therapy from daily life, our therapists and field instructors work as one integrated treatment team. Individual therapy, group therapy, family work, and everyday experiences all reinforce one another, creating opportunities for meaningful growth throughout treatment.

This integrated approach transforms what might otherwise feel like outpatient therapy combined with outdoor adventure into a truly comprehensive nature-based treatment program.

Our Clinical Foundation

Every student is supported by a coordinated team of therapists, field instructors, medical professionals, and family support staff working toward the same treatment goals.

Weekly treatment team meetings bring clinicians together to review progress, share observations, and adjust treatment as students grow. Rather than following a one-size-fits-all model, treatment continually evolves to meet each student's unique strengths, needs, and goals.

Our clinical approach is grounded in Family Systems and trauma-informed care, recognizing that lasting change happens within the context of relationships. Drawing from a range of evidence-based approaches, including CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing, and specialized strategies for our adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder, our clinicians thoughtfully tailor treatment to the unique needs of each student.

Students don't grow because life becomes easier. They grow because they discover they are capable of more than they believed possible.

Putting Insight into Practice

Therapy creates insight. Daily life creates opportunities to practice it. As students navigate relationships, responsibilities, successes, and setbacks, field instructors help them apply the skills and perspectives introduced in therapy. They reinforce treatment goals through coaching, therapeutic groups, assignments, and everyday interactions, helping students build healthier patterns that become increasingly natural over time. Because therapists and field instructors communicate continuously, students experience a consistent therapeutic approach no matter who they are working with.

The Milan Group

One of the ways this collaboration comes to life is through our weekly Milan Group. Therapists, field instructors, and students come together to reflect on the week, share observations, and ensure continuity across the treatment team.

More than a clinical staffing meeting, Milan Group is a therapeutic experience in itself. Students are invited to give and receive thoughtful feedback, gain new perspectives, recognize patterns, and celebrate progress. The process strengthens accountability, emotional awareness, and self-reflection while helping students internalize what they are learning.

Building Insight & Lasting Change

Our goal is not simply to help students feel better during treatment. It is to help them understand themselves more deeply, develop healthier ways of responding to life's challenges, and build the confidence that comes from doing difficult things successfully.

Over time, patterns of avoidance and reactivity are replaced with resilience, accountability, healthier relationships, and a stronger sense of self. These are the skills students carry with them long after they leave Second Nature.
